Columbus described it to Queen Isabella by crumpling a sheet of paper into a ball, then spreading it out a bit and throwing it on the floor.  A very good description! 

About the same size as Maryland, most of it rugged mountains, less than 30% of the land arable — home to some 9 million people, nearly twice as many as in Maryland.
